Subject:Latin summer school recommendations?
Time:03:40 pm
Hello,

I'm looking to attend an intensive advanced Latin summer school this summer and am wondering if anyone has any recommendations. I've found quite a few sites for Latin summer schools online but they're mostly at the beginner/intermediate level; what I'm looking for isn't grammar/vocabulary practice so much as the opportunity to spend a few weeks immersed in reading as much Classical prose and poetry as possible.

Any ideas?

I'm in the US, but will probably be in Europe for part of the summer, so either could work.

In which case, there is this (which is amazing value for money) and the advanced classes are text based.

If you would like a longer, residential course, the one at Lampeter caters for advanced students.

I've been to both of these and would happily recommend them for good teaching, nice students and value for money.

Thanks! I've actually attended the London summer school for Greek. The class moved a bit slowly for my taste, but then my Latin isn't as good as my Greek so maybe the level would be right. And as you say, the price can't be beat. I'll definitely look into the Lampeter one, too.

If you are anywhere in Europe, look, if L.V.P.A. has a seminarium this year, or perhaps Melissa.

JACT runs a summer school at Durham University in England.
Four or five years ago it had one concentrating on the satires of Juvenal, but I don't see anything similar this year.
But it does offer an advanced level course, but the paragraph on the website is very vague about what it involves. It is only a week long. It might be worth contacting the organisers - they are asking for text suggestions from those interested.

Thanks! I'm not sure the dates would work (I may go to Leiden summer school, which overlaps with this), but it's an option.
